Building a Creative Routine

Being consistent is absolutely key to creative success. I promise you, this statement holds true across various artistic endeavors. Create even when you don’t feel that spark of inspiration, and perhaps you will discover that inspiration surprisingly finds you, or you may simply become a better and more skilled creator in the process. Often, we find ourselves believing that we can only create when inspiration strikes, leading us to wait around for that perfect moment to begin a new project. But what if that perfect moment never arrives? Imagine how many valuable opportunities and experiences you may miss out on if you don’t take the initiative to start today.

Our minds are a muscle and if you don’t exercise them they won’t get stronger. If a body builder only worked out when they felt in the mood do you think they would achieve their fitness goals? Probably not. So why do you think if you don’t put in the work or only try things when it feels easy you will achieve the goals you have.

I like to set myself goals at the beginning of the year that help me stay consistent. This year my goals were to

  1. Post a blog post every Monday.

  2. Post on Vocal.media every Tuesday and Thursday.

I like to keep it simple and easy to track. This way I can clearly see myself completing them and know what my expectation for myself for the year is. Having a constant posting habit helps me push myself to write even when inspiration isn’t there. I like to use tools like Vocal and Prompts to help me find inspiration and push me to write new things. If you want to check out these things I will leave the links below for you!

Vocal - A platform to post your writings and helps you build a community. You can read other people’s works to find inspiration on what you could work on. A little bonus with this platform is they will actually pay you a little bit for people reading your work and people can also leave you tips if they really like your work.

Prompt - Is an app I use that is full of writing prompts to help spark your creativity. You can set daily writing goals to help you keep track of your progress as well. They also have a way to post your work and get feedback from other people on the platform. Another feature it has is competitions where you can put your writing to the test against other writers.

If you’re not a writer there are plenty of other ways to be inspired to create just one google search away. Another way I’ve used to get ideas is using ChatGPT. Ask it to give you inspiration on your desired topic and it will give you a list of starting ideas. We sometimes view AI as the enemy or something that is trying to steal our jobs and lives. If used right though I believe AI can be an amazing tool to help assist us and not steal from us.

It’s not cheating if you don’t have it make your entire piece for you. Use it as a starting point and then you get to take over the creative reigns and finish your masterpiece.

This week set yourself a goal and try to stick with it. Maybe it’s taking an hour a week to work on your creative project. Make sure once you set your goal you stick with it! Let us know what goals you are setting to help you stay consistent this week.
