Practice writing lyrics
Sometimes you need to force yourself to create if you are going to continue to be creative. It’s okay to sometimes have a creative block. What is not okay is to allow that to make you give up all your goals and dreams. I promise you everyone who has successfully created something did not do it without having some low points. You are far from being alone.
We can’t use writers block or I wasn’t feeling it today as excuses not to create. We always have the ability to create we just have to search harder some days than others. By forcing your brain to make something you are releasing yourself from the chains holding you back. Whatever you make may not be the most amazing piece of work and that is okay. It may not win you any prizes but it continues to push you forward. It keeps you from becoming stagnant and unmoving.
Here are some practical things you can do to help stir up some creativity.
Try something new. If you're a musician who always writes songs, try writing a short story or coloring a picture. Just as athletes work different muscle groups to improve overall performance, exploring new creative outlets can help develop your artistic abilities. It can help stimulate new areas in your brain and spark new ideas. You may even find a new hobby that brings a new sense of joy into your life.
Push yourself. If you typically take your time creating, try challenging yourself to complete something in just 5-10 minutes. Keep the project simple, but make it mentally engaging. For example, select a word or picture and list as many different ways to describe it as you can within 5 minutes. Try to use as many sensory details as possible so someone could picture what you are seeing even if they don’t have the picture or word in front of them.
These are both great ways to improve your lyrical content if you are a songwriter. Being able to describe something in many different ways can unlock a whole world of metaphors and ideas for a song. Keeping things unpredictable can help keep your listeners inspired and wanting more.
The title of this post refers to writing lyrics, but if you are a creative in other fields, don't think none of these tips don't apply to you. Whatever your art is, it is telling a story—and not just any story, it's your story. And that matters, so make sure you are telling it in the best way possible.
Today, my challenge to you is to expand your horizons and try something new that will spark a fresh sense of life and creativity. Please share what you plan to try in the comments section—we always love to hear your stories and learn how you're being creative.
